As for What is Flashpacking, when it comes to Who is the Flashpacker it looks like two main definitions can be found online. The Flashpacker appear to be either a young student but with some extra cash, or someone who has (or had) a job, now on a break to travel around. We would quite agree with these definitions, as in those two kinds of traveler are indeed quite easy to find, except for the fact that we don't really like the idea of the definition of Flashpacker to be based simply on someone's employment or age. When it comes to Flashpacking, rather then the who (the social status) or the when (your age when you travel) we believe is rather the how. If we agree that Flashpacking is Backpacking with a flash, in style, then a Flashpacker is whoever feels like traveling that way. And you don't necessarily need a huge amount of money for your tech gear or for fancy hostel/hotel rooms. Most of the flash comes from the knowledge of less touristical places, or the capacity to secure great deals. Normally then a Flashpacker would be internet savvy and have a laptop, but not simply because she/he is a geek, but because often it's on internet (not on a guidebook) that you will find the still off-the beaten track destination, meaning usually cheaper prices for a trip in style. Guidebooks, being printed, by their nature tend to be a bit behind the latest developments. It's worth pointing out here that knowledge might come also from exchanging information with other Flashpackers, just to reinforce that you don't necessarily need to be a geek to be a Flashpacker. If Flashpacking is Backpacking with a flash, then the Flashpacker is whoever is able to do so, with that ability coming not necessarily from age or cash, but from knowledge. | ![]()
